Today I stepped out the door for the first run in a systematized regimen designed to get me ready for the Ironman in South Africa on March 20. It started raining just as I stepped out, so I went back inside and changed into some Nike gear that is good in wet weather.
I ran very easily, careful not to cause too much strain to a body that was recently not 100% healthy. I stopped once to watch some ducks. It was good to be out there, almost deserted, in Lake Park, although it was a bit stinky in parts and I ran into a small cloud of bugs that were trying to dodge raindrops. I did 10 pullups and although I feel very out of shape, I guess if I can do that I'm doing quite well. The rain got steadily harder, and by the time I got back, 51 minutes later, it was really pelting down. The run is something I need to work very hard on. I think I will run twice tomorrow.
I ran around 8km today, and my heart rate was an average of 137, maximum 149. This was my first run after the marathon (average 147), and my heart rate was low enough for me to feel that the cold is not effecting me in a serious way.
I felt a niggling sensation behind my right ankle. I am not sure what it was because I felt it before the marathon, and ran the whole marathon, and the twinge stayed at the same you-can-barely-feel-me-can't-you consistency.
I've got to go now and do some grocery shopping. I'm glad that despite the rain I was resolute today to get some running done, and I enjoyed the run. 'Brick by brick, my fellow citizens, brick by brick.'
