Let's see now... I just needed a place to sit and a few minutes later, so did Katie. Also a student...thinking...what was it...oh, yes, House and Interior Design. She said she wished she had studied architecture. I told her to read The Fountainhead, by Ayn Rand, and that my father was a builder, and so I had studied building for 3 years.
She's travelled to Cambodia and all over East Asia, and she wanted to go to Vietnam next. She said she's been coming to The Bar for 6 years.
I think Corneli came here for New Year's with Rowan. Friday/Saturday night is one of the few nights I have gone out without Corneli, and I really had the chance to meet a lot of people. I would have liked her to have come along, Jeff especially wanted to meet her, but I met many more people than I otherwise would have, I think. I also think if she'd come along I would have gone home with her in a taxi much earlier, when the evening seemed to be edging towards disaster.
Ultimately it was a good night. Just before we left The Bar Valentin told me he wanted to meet a 'South African girl'. The thought crossed my mind that he had a virtually 0% chance of finding one here. We found ourselves watching a girl dancing with someone who appeared to be her boyfriend. Jeff got up and danced with a Korean lady who seemed to be a little lonely. Valentin and I sat together, finishing off our beers and commenting on the sultry girl with curled and dyed red hair. Valentin thought there was something latina about her. I caught her eye and as she was about to leave, called her closer. Her name was Nicky, and she was from Durban in South Africa. I said I was from South Africa too, and she was like, "No way." I said I was from Bloem. That convinced her. She was on her way out but said she hoped she'd see me again.
I greeted a guy I'd met earlier on, I think his name was Todd...from Montreal...went to Katie and said au revoir, and then left. Outside we spoke to a guy with black rimmed glasses, from Portland, Oregon. You meet people from just about anywhere on an average night out.
Finally we walked through the wet black streets and found a moving blue light attached to a taxi. We got to Ilsan at about 5am, and each paid out W5000, which is a really good deal. I got home and played Counterstrike for an hour before finally finding a pillow.
