WHILE the country's crude oil output fell by 7.3 per cent in September, the natural gas output remained unchanged. Crude oil output fell by 7.3 per cent to 2.57 million tonnes (mt) in September from 2.77 mt in the corresponding period last year.
According to an official statement issued here on Thursday, Indian refineries processed 10.51 mt of crude oil during the period under review compared with 10.02 mt in the corresponding month last year.
One of the reasons for the fall in output was the fire at a platform owned by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) at the Mumbai region. Production from the Mumbai High fields, which yield more than half of the country's annual oil production, fell by 12 per cent to 1.29 mt. For the six months ended September 30, crude oil production fell by 5 per cent to 16.16 mt compared with the same period last year. Further, the oil product consumption fell 3.2 per cent in September, led by lower usage of diesel (after heavy rainfall reduced the need for farmers to run agricultural pumps.) The natural gas output remained unchanged at 2.6 billion cubic meters in September.
