Smit could lead the Boks into the jaws of hell while the England players probably wouldn’t follow Borthwick to the mouth of the Thames.
One British hack suggested Smit could lead the Boks into the jaws of hell while the England players probably wouldn’t follow Borthwick to the mouth of the Thames.
For those of us who were at Ellis Park in ’72 (when John Pullin’s English no-hopers beat over-hypers), sympathy for a beaten England does not come easily. But there was almost some for Martin Johnson, facing an aggressive questioner after the game. The sharp-tongued man with the microphone treated the England manager as if he were a prosecutor in a child-molesting trial and Johnson the defendant.
Johnson stood his ground well, even though his answers were unconvincing. I can’t imagine a South African coach or manager ever submitting to such abrasive interrogation, not that it’s likely to happen with all the sycophants inhabiting our TV.
