Cyclist dies in crash at Invercargill intersection

NVDL: I am not aware of a single incident where a bicycle crashes into a car, and the car driver dies. The moral of the story is that any person driving a car has a responsibility to be more careful - not less. In South Africa alone 10 000 people die from car accidents a year. One cyclists is killed on average, each day. In the world, over 1 million people die from car accidents, and 20 times that number of injured or maimed.

Yet we drive as though it is no big deal. Drive carefully!

Senior Sergeant Richard McPhail said the crash happened about 5pm at the intersection of Tay and Lindisfarne streets.

The 61-year-old cyclist was heading north on Lindisfarne St when he and a Daihatsu 4WD being driven east on Tay St by a 22-year-old woman collided.

The cyclist was taken by ambulance to Southland Hospital but died a short time later from his injuries, Mr McPhail said. The woman was shaken but unhurt.
