Peak Oil - When Bad News is the Best News

As you read all the ostensibly ‘bad’ news, especially about the economy, consider this: were it not for peak oil and the financial crisis, the growth economy would continue to devour the planet’s resources, destroy ecosystems, pollute the atmosphere, water and land, and accelerate the mass extinction of other species.

It seems that to change their culture and behaviour, humans (individually and collectively) usually need a dramatic wake-up call – so perhaps some level of socio-economic collapse is required for the long-term survival of human civilisation. This is not to say that the process will not be painful for many millions – if not billions – of people. But change has to happen, in one way or another, and time is running out for a more orderly transition to sustainability. - Jeremy Wakeford, ASPOSA Newsletter 24 November 2008

From the Kremlin to Caracas, how oil collapse changes everything

As the price of a barrel falls to below $50 for the first time in years - to a third of its value just a few months ago - petrol will be cheaper but the shockwaves mean crisis for oil-producing nations and further instability for a battered global economy
