South Africans - steer clear of these fish, eat those instead

NVDL: In the good old days my father once won a holiday for a huge Kob he caught (at Kob Inn in Transkei). Then I was about 8 or 9 years old, and the Kob was about as long as I was. Those seafood evenings in Transkei - mmmmm. But that's why we are where we are today. We've raped the ocean to satisfy our appetities.

Now we need to be more dicerning and more discriminate in our diets. Read below for the specifics on what to eat and to not to...

Fish such as dorado, hake, and yellowtail get the green light, meaning they are the best choice because they are sourced from well-managed populations; species such as kingklip, kob, prawns and sole get the orange light, because they have been overfished, or the fisheries from which they come damage the environment; and seafood that is specially protected and cannot be legally sold — such as galjoen and white stumpnose — gets the red light.

The WWF has already persuaded restaurant chains John Dory and Spur to participate in its scheme, and is now focusing on individual restaurants. It also plans to use internet booking sites to help consumers choose restaurants that support the initiative.
