I recently saw a documentary on Discovery that showed, I think, the crash of TWA 800. Basically two small little wires near the fuselage got covered in soot, and since they carried very low voltages, they caused an ignition. You have to see it to believe it, but the ignition caused such a violent explosion, the fuel got sprayed at extreme pressures forward, meaning that when it ignited, the explosion was even more energetic. It basically ripped the plane appart, causing the front, the head of the plane, to sheer right off and fall into the sea. The rest of the plane, its wings and fuselage on fire, with no head, started to climb. Imagine being in the plane, seeing the view through the burning neck (with no head) of the plane, and the wings on fire. Finally the plane climbed so high the engines stalled and the plane then turned to dive directly down into the sea and tremendous speed. No one could possibly survive all this. Having watched the documentary, you realise what can happen if things do go wrong on an aeroplane. It's quite a magnificent way to meet your maker. They also said there are still many of these Boeings (with faulty wiring systems) in fleets that have not yet replaced them. For the record, it's a Boeing, I'm not sure which model number.
