I need someone to confirm the distance. One guy's clock read 107km. Mine read 116km (which I know was wrong, because my maximum speed was 89km/h - er, no). So was it 110km?
The race started off at a blistering pace with attacks coming from all the top pro teams but none were successful and the peloton remained intact until the first big climb at approximately 40km. There was a group that went clear containing Nic White, Ian McLeod (both MTN), Jamie Ball (House of Paint) and Neotel’s Jaco Venter. The breakaway was however reeled in after 5km and then a flurry of attacks ensued from MTN, Neotel, Toyota Cycle Lab SuperCycling and Konica-Minolta.
Coming into the home stretch, it was Rabie that took the initiative and came around the corner in first place. With just 300m to the line the Neotel all-rounder had a marginal lead over Kachelhoffer and he managed to fend him off and take a well earned victory. The MTN duo of McLeod and White took 3rd and 4th respectively.
