Hurricane Paloma is currently 364 miles south - almost due south, of Key West. Paloma is boomeranging on a north easterly track, looking like curving in to hit the East Florida Coast.
Cat 4 - this may make Paloma the biggest storm of the season. Quite an achievement this late in the season. Here's an extract from the advisory:
REPORTS FROM AN AIR FORCE RESERVE HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT INDICATE THAT MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS HAVE INCREASED TO NEAR 140 MPH...225KM/HR...WITH HIGHER GUSTS. PALOMA IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS CATEGORY FOUR HURRICANE ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON SCALE. SOME ADDITIONAL STRENGTHENING IS POSSIBLE THIS MORNING...WITH WEAKENING
EXPECTED LATER TODAY THROUGH SUNDAY.
