Hurricane Paloma now Cat 4 - targetting Cuba then Eastern Florida [TRACK]


Hurricane Paloma is currently 364 miles south - almost due south, of Key West. Paloma is boomeranging on a north easterly track, looking like curving in to hit the East Florida Coast.
Cat 4 - this may make Paloma the biggest storm of the season. Quite an achievement this late in the season. Here's an extract from the advisory:

REPORTS FROM AN AIR FORCE RESERVE HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT INDICATE THAT MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS HAVE INCREASED TO NEAR 140 MPH...225KM/HR...WITH HIGHER GUSTS. PALOMA IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS CATEGORY FOUR HURRICANE ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON SCALE. SOME ADDITIONAL STRENGTHENING IS POSSIBLE THIS MORNING...WITH WEAKENING
EXPECTED LATER TODAY THROUGH SUNDAY.

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands – Paloma became an "extremely dangerous" Category 4 hurricane early Saturday, dumping wind and rain on the Cayman Islands and threatening to strike hurricane-ravaged Cuba as a major storm, forecasters said.

The new forecast from the National Hurricane Center in Miami called for Paloma to make landfall in Cuba as a major hurricane late Saturday or early Sunday with maximum-sustained winds of at least 111 mph (178 kph).
