NVDL: What's more incredible is Pistorius played rugby at school. Not hockey, not chess or ping pong - rugby.
The boy in Athens is now a ruggedly handsome and affable 21-year-old man. Pistorius has a tattoo of Roman numerals that runs the inside length of his right biceps. The numbers commemorate his mother, Sheila, who died when he was 15 and never saw him run competitively.
A middle child, Pistorius took after his older brother, Carl, a rugby player. To the surprise of his doctor, Pistorius joined the rugby team at his boarding school, playing inside center and left wing, positions that required strength, speed and the agility to move laterally. He used his everyday walking prosthetic legs.
"That's something I really miss, that whole team aspect and the camaraderie that goes with it, the physical contact," he said. "You just want to tackle and make those hard runs and knock things over."
