Ike strengthens - and turns [UPDATED TRACK]

Hurricane Ike is now in the Gulf of Mexico. After clearing the Cuban landmass Ike has strengthened slightly, and this is likely to gain momentum during the day and as Ike moves deeper into Gulf waters.

Ike's track (see below) remains on a trajectory for Corpus Christi, Texas, after which Ike is projected to make a radical northerly shift.

Probably by Friday we will have a clearer idea of what Ike will do when it makes landfall on the US (probably Texas) coast
