Ike blowing at 105mph now - further strengthening possible [UPDATED TRACK]

Ike is now 425km southeast of Galveston Texas. Hurricane Ike has taken a long time to get organised, but Ike still has a long time to cross the Gulf. Ike has maintained sustained winds of 100mph, but the speed of the overall system has started to increase, and now the system itself is starting to swirl faster.

REPORTS FROM AN AIR FORCE RESERVE HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT INDICATE THAT MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS HAVE INCREASED TO NEAR 105 MPH...165 KM/HR...WITH HIGHER GUSTS. IKE IS A CATEGORY TWO HURRICANE ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON SCALE.

SOME ADDITIONAL STRENGTHENING IS FORECAST DURING THE NEXT 24 HOURS...AND IKE IS FORECAST TO BECOME A
MAJOR HURRICANE BEFORE THE CENTER REACHES THE COAST.

The hottest waters of the Gulf are along the Gulf coast, so the question is whether the storm will weaken as it approaches land or strengthen over these waters.
