Hurricane Ike - US landfall graphic with oil installations + UPDATED TRACK

NVDL: Ike is on course to hit Houston, Texas according to current models. Once Ike clears Cuba and enters the Gulf we'll have a clearer idea of Ike's strengthening potential.

Right now Ike is moving due west at 14mph as a Cat 2 storm.

Ike will be spending a lot of time over the Gulf, and intensity will be controlled by external variables like the timing of passing systems that may either cause shear or improve outflow. As long as a somewhat intact circulation makes it off of Cuba (which is almost certain) the amount of strength lost will be almost irrelevant for future intensity. Recall how quickly storms can rebuild over the Gulf.

As with Gustav, we'll know more once the storm actually enters the Gulf tomorrow evening.
