Ode to the Avocado

One avocado is said to have all the nutrients of a banana, a pomegranate, an orange and an apple and all their fibre in one – and they are also are said to be great aphrodisiacs. - Sowetan.co.za

SHOOT: Love this stuff. Great to use instead of plasticky margarine or butter on bread. Perfect in a salad, also nice on their own in some lemon juice and pepper.

Have you ever wondered why most health foods are seasonal?

Consider the health glitches we often face with each season. We get oranges – some of the most potent Vitamin C sources – in winter, when we need them the most.

But the fruit we often take for granted, though, is the avocado, and it too is available just as we need it.

Here are the most well known health benefits of avocados for both adults and children :

  • It protects against cholesterol-related heart diseases.
  • It reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases. (And winter has a way of piling these into our bloodstreams because of our need for comfort foods).
  • It is used both for the prevention and treatment of prostate and breast cancers.
  • Scientists have proven that the toxins in avocado kills cancer cells.

Avocado also contains minerals such as potassium, calcium, vitamin C and K, folic acid, copper, sodium and the dietary fibre that the body needs.

People who live in hot climates tend to suffer great mineral and water loss.
