ANC gets 'last chance' to deliver

“I’m giving the ANC one last chance to deliver and I am hoping that they will deliver this time and if they don’t, things will have to change next time,” said Herry Nkosi, 39, an accountant.

SHOOT: It should be interesting to see how the ANC explain rising unemployment and rising food costs. It should be even more interesting to see if they have a scheme to ameliorate an already critical situation. Trevor Manuel to the rescue? Might Zuma be booted out and Manuel installed 9 months from now? Stranger things have happened.

The ANC is headed for election victory despite a reinvigorated opposition challenge, and party leader Jacob Zuma is easily on course to become president.

Early results showed the African National Congress with 64,9%, battering the hopes of the Congress of the People (Cope) party, formed by ANC dissidents, that it might pose the first real challenge since the end of apartheid in 1994.

COPE won just over 8% of the early votes counted.

The biggest challenge came from the Democratic Alliance, with just under 18% so far.

The DA pulled ahead of the ANC in the Western Cape province — South Africa’s premier tourist destination, which is currently controlled by the ANC — winning 52,27% of the total votes counted by early afternoon.
