Who is winning South Africa's election online? [HINT - it's NOT the ANC!]

While the ANC is getting the lion's share of publicity, followed far behind by Cope and then the DA, it may surprise some to find that COPE is leading the ANC on Sowetan's online poll. COPE has over 44% of 10 000 votes, with the ANC at 41.54%.

On The Times.co.za's glitzy Elections website it takes a bit of browsing to find that the DA are well ahead, at 2412 supporters, ahead of COPE with 1431. The Vryheidsfront comes in a surprising 3rd with 720 and the ANC fourth with 519. [Unfortunately the party symbols do not display in the boxes clipped below.] Visit their site here:

What does all this mean? Probably very little. The ruling party will come from voters who have little or no internet access; the rural poor, the majority of South Africans. These are likley to have received their messages (promises) directly from leaders, at rallies. If South Africans care about their political future, leaders and citizens ought to invest themselves in these poor local communities, and share their knowledge about the political process and its manipulators.
