Review: Watchmen Actors Trumped by Awesome Visuals

I read The Watchmen book about 15 years ago. I thought it was a great story and was very moving. I hope the film does it justice. I wish I could have been a part of helping put the film together.

On the plus side, Snyder and his 300 team -- cinematographer Larry Fong, editor William Hoy and costume designer Michael Williamson -- know how to frame a compelling wide-screen spectacle.

Some scenes are truly stirring: Dr. Manhattan, a scientist turned into a certifiable superhero by a horrific laboratory accident, towers over hordes of surrendering Viet Cong like an Aztec god descended from the clouds. A flag-draped coffin drops into a rainy graveyard as the Manhattan skyline looms in the distance. The airborne Owl Ship hurtles out of the Hudson River en route to an icy Antarctic fortress.

Fueled by classic pop songs and rendered in a variety of slow-mo, speed-up and freeze-frames, these epic money shots demonstrate Snyder's flair for the heightened effect.

Rorschach may be a brutal vigilante with no respect for constitutional rights, but he brings a single-minded focus to his mission (and also gets most of the movie's best lines).
