H5N1 now in the world - threat remains

Indonesia reports 4 H5N1 deaths


Mar 3, 2009 (CIDRAP News) – An Indonesian health official said today that four more people have died of H5N1 avian influenza over the past month, as an Indonesian newspaper reported two more deaths possibly due to the disease.


If the World Health Organization (WHO) confirms the cases, the country's count will rise to 145 cases and 119 deaths. For now, the total stands at 141 cases and 115 deaths.

Bird Flu Virus Found in Duck in Southern Germany, Officials Say

March 11 (Bloomberg) -- German officials found a duck in
southern Germany that carried the H5N1 strain of the bird flu
virus that causes serious illness.

Bird flu detected in quail in central Japan

Tokyo  - Bird flu has been detected at a quail farm in the central Japanese city of Toyohashi, the government said Friday.

Local authorities sequestered a 10-kilometre area around the farm, and plan to cull a large number of the birds, the Jiji Press news agency said.
