SHOOT: This update applies to Mexico and Great Britain. Currently the official status in South Africa is unchanged.

Cases of the virus peaked at 110,000 a week in July [in the UK], but have been falling steadily since then.

There are now 143 people in hospital in England with swine flu, of whom 23 are in intensive care.

Across Britain the total death toll since the pandemic began in April now stands at 79, up from 75 last week.

MEXICO CITY — Mexico could see up to 5 million cases of swine flu during this winter's flu season, a higher projection than officials had previously given, the health secretary said Thursday.

Secretary Jose Angel Cordova said that in the worst-case scenario, deaths could reach 2,000.

Last month, Cordova said that he expected a maximum of 1 million cases and 1,000 deaths during this year's flu season in Mexico, which has a population of 107 million.

Mexico currently has 25,214 reported cases and 217 deaths.

The number of new swine flu cases in England has risen for the first time in
weeks, signalling that the second wave of the virus could have begun.

There were an estimated 5,000 new infections last week, up from 3,000 the
previous week.

Earlier this month, Sir Liam estimated that 19,000 people would die from the
virus under the "worst case scenario", a significant drop from the
figure of 65,000 given in July.
