SHOOT: If you have a moment, click on the link below and read the article in full. If you're a discerning reader with a little common sense, you'll see that Ahmadinejad doesn't really say anything wrong, or anything that is aggressive or insensible. But the writer of this story - Ann Curry - does frame this story [and it's a skew frame at that] in a way that implies he is talking about nuclear weapons, that he refuses to 'rule out nuclear weapons'. Actually, he is defending his right to a nuclear energy program.
Three times Curry presses him: “Are there conditions under which Iran would weaponize?”
Now consider the situation, the world's super power is essentially harassing a smaller power with access to a lot of energy [in theory, energy the superpower wants].
Do you say, "We'll play rollover so you can walk over us, no we won't develop weapons to defend yourselves - like you have, including a weapons shield intended for Europe." Or do you say, "Yes, if we're threatened" only to have headlines trumpeted around the world IRAN SAYS THEY WILL BUILD NUKES - LET'S NUKE 'EM BEFORE THEY DO!"
It's a clever but cynical propaganda piece, and what it does is gradually builds Iran and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as a villain in the minds of the American people, just as they did with Saddam and Iraq. People don't know why they don't trust him, and don't like him, they just feel that they don't. Well it's due to deceit-filled articles like this.
Ahmadinejad refuses to rule out weapons
Iran won’t stop work on ‘peaceful’ nuclear programs, president tells NBC
Ahmadinejad rebuffed repeated attempts to say whether he would explicitly rule out developing nuclear weapons, saying only that they were “not a part of our programs and plans” because “we don’t need such a weapon.”
But “if you are talking about the enrichment of uranium for peaceful purposes, this will never be closed down here in Iran,” he said.
Nor will Tehran take any steps that might weaken its defenses against “the Zionists” — a reference to Israel — and “the warheads which have been stockpiled in Britain, in the U.S., in a handful of other countries,” he said.
“Who started the Iraq war, or Afghanistan, for that matter?” Ahmadinejad asked. “What parties supported Saddam against Iran? Today, who are behind the killing of the Palestinians?”
