South Africa's population contracting because of AIDS

SHOOT: In the last few years the population of South Africa has contracted by 0.31%. That's 150 000 people fewer in total. According to the article, 1 in 5 SA women is HIV positive. You'd think there would be an incredible culture here of being averse to dating, and sticking to one partner. And checking one's staus would be done often and be a popular practise. You'd expect abstinence to be seen as a conventional alternative. But given the low profile of AIDS, if it weren't for the statistics you wouldn't know it existed.

There are 49,32 million people in South Africa. Of this, around one-fifth of women in reproductive age are HIV positive.

The agency said the implied rate of growth for the South African population had declined between 2001 and 2009.

“The estimated overall growth rate declined from approximately 1.38% between 2001-2002 to 1.07% for 2007-2009.

“The growth rate for females is lower than that of males,” Statistics SA said.
