Brechlin, also 18, yesterday told The Times how, seconds before the mayhem, he had feared for his own life but had tried to stop the attack.
‘‘When I saw Morne smearing his face black and putting on the mask [modelled on masks worn by metal band Slipknot], I knew something was very wrong. He was not himself.
‘‘I realised that it really was planned, that he was serious. We had to put a stop to it,” said Brechlin.
‘‘I really tried to reason with him, to talk him out of it. I tried to stop him, before he took it too far ... I told him I was going for a walk.
