CNN: "It is total devastation everywhere," the councilor for the Manchioneal division, Alston Hunter, told the Jamaican Gleaner newspaper. "Several residents are now crammed into disaster shelters here in east Portland, and the weather continues to make the situation worse."
MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- Gustav's top winds increased to 100 mph (155 km/hr) Saturday, making it a Category 2 storm as it approaches the western tip of Cuba, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida.
Forecasters warn Gustav could grow to be a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale as it barrels toward the U.S. Gulf Coast for a landfall late Monday or Tuesday, although they predict it would weaken to a Category 3 storm before reaching land.
The hurricane center's five-day chart places a possible landfall anywhere from Corpus Christi, Texas, eastward to Mobile, Alabama. New Orleans, devastated by Hurricane Katrina three years ago Friday, is at the center of the projected path. See Gustav's projected path »
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Hanna passed north of the Leeward Islands Friday with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph (80 km/h), the center said.
The center also said "gradual" strengthening is forecasted, and Hanna could be near hurricane strength on Sunday.
