Tropical Storm Fay bears down on Cuba

Fay has left a trail of destruction across the Caribbean, claiming at least 11 lives in the Dominican Republic and Haiti and pummelling Cuba. While it has been moving at a relatively slow 50mph, it is forecast to intensify to hurricane force by the time it arrives in the Florida Keys, 90 miles north of Cuba.

But Shell has pulled 400 workers from offshore platforms and Marathon Oil said it would take an unspecified number of workers off its offshore facilities.

In Haiti, where a bus plunged into a river reportedly killing dozens, the heavy rains killed seven people and left another three missing.

In Miami, residents descended on filling stations and supermarkets to stock up on fuel and bottled water. Local television stations broadcast warnings about possible power cuts.
