Feeling Switchy
Number portability kicks in next Monday
Tired of your cellular network operator? On September 18, all subscribers will have the option of changing networks, whilst maintaining the use of their original cell phone numbers. The UK have enjoyed this privilege since 1999.
Studies have indicated that about 20% of subscribers would like to switch networks, but only about half that number will go through the rigmarole. It is likely to be a one-off fee of R75, but it’s not necessarily going to be cheaper to change networks.
Here’s why:
It’s important to remember that if you change networks, and your number remains the same, other callers thinking they are calling network to network (intranetwork) actually are not.
The real value of number portability is by consolidating groups onto the same networks. This means that a family (or business) who was originally on a number of different networks can agree to join the same network. There will be real cost savings involved here if most calls are done between the members of this group.
Number portability is likely to benefit the smaller networks (such as Virgin Mobile/Cell C, and MTN). Vodacom, with the largest subscriber base, is likely to lose relatively more subscribers than other networks.
