SION MILOSKY drowns at Mavericks

SHOOT: Very sad every time this happens. Surfing's not the safest sport, and big wave surfing even less so. Seems like a very cool dude.

Sion Milosky RIP.
Sion Milosky RIP.
Terrible news to report regarding Hawaiian big wave surfer Sion Milosky, who was surfing Maverick's this evening. Maverick's surfer Matt Ambrose just informed me that Milosky passed away this evening surfing large conditions at Maverick's, with forecasters calling for set waves measuring in excess of 30 feet.

Conditions that large can create wave faces as high as 60 feet. 35 year-old Sion Milosky, an accomplished big wave surfer originally from Kauai, Hawaii, reportedly fell and suffered a two-wave hold down. Veteran Maverick's charger Ken "Skindog" Collins told the Santa Cruz Sentinel that following the wipeout, fellow Maverick's surfer Nathan Fletcher went looking for Milosky on a personal water craft.

Fletcher found Milosky approximately 20 minutes later floating at the Pillar Point Harbor mouth, which is located close to a mile away from where Maverick's breaks.
Milosky was reportedly taken by Cal Fire to Seaton Coastside Medical Center in Half Moon Bay, CA after rescue units unsuccessfully attempted CPR. Milosky, who is the second surfer to ever pass away surfing Maverick's and the first since Mark Foo tragically passed away in 1994, is survived by his wife and two young daughters.
This story will be updated as more information comes in.
