MERC MEC gets a new job, meanwhile 'stolen' vehicle found in neighboring country, and vehcile was bought twice

“The Government Garage could have provided her with a car. There was no rush to buy that car," an official said.

SHOOT: Simple - you may an 'erroneous' payment using the government's money, and you have it refunded into your own account. What's also very interesting is the speed at which this fraudulent activity took place. Within days of being sworn in this scam was pulled off. Like, they literally couldn't wait.

THE mystery of an expensive car bought for a Gauteng MEC and stolen within hours of delivery took another twist yesterday, when it emerged that a criminal complaint had been laid against a senior official from the provincial agriculture and rural development department for allegedly authorising and processing two payments for the vehicle.

It also emerged that the car had been located in a neighbouring country and authorities were working to return it to SA.

Head of the department Steven Cornelius yesterday confirmed that the official, whose name is known to Business Day, allegedly authorised and processed the two payments — R920000 to Bez Mega Motors and more than R1m to another company listed as a service provider in the government database.

Agriculture and Rural Development MEC Nomantu Nkomo- Ralehoko resigned last week, saying she took political responsibility after the irregular purchase of the Mercedes Benz ML 63 AMG.
