Over the past few days there have been extensive rains over Southern Africa, exacerbating the spread of this disease. It may (or may not) have reached Malawi, although the signs are worrying. See below from Malawi's 'Daily Times'.
One suspected cholera patient was on Sunday admitted to Chikwawa District Hospital with medial authorities suspecting the disease has also affected some rural parts of the district.
However, Mbewe said the case in admission was subject to confirmation because specimen was sent to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre.
“We have so far got only one cholera suspect who was admitted on Sunday. At the moment, we have taken specimen for tests and confirmation in Blantyre,” Mbewe said.
He said this was the first reported case of cholera in the district.
In a related development, last week Mchinji District Hospital admitted 10 patients suspected to have contracted cholera.
But Mchinji District Health Officer Nedson Fosiko thought the 10 patients were admitted due to diarrhoea, as cholera tests proved negative.
Fosiko added that one patient, who came from a village across the border, died upon reaching the hospital due to excessive vomiting and diarrhoea.
