If you respond from an ego point of view, so will he. The solution is, maintain a low profile, actually withdraw from the picture but shoot him up with truth serum to sobre him up.
"She says she's pissed off at me for not confronting you more aggressively, maybe taking your beer and throwing it against the wall."
Think about that for a second. You're the drunk up to no good, and the girl's boyfriend basically rains on your parade telling you what she has told him, and it basically amounts to disgust, disapproval and a whole lot of rejection. There's not really much to say subsequently is there?
