A consumer is a creature with no conscience; driven merely to get, find, have without any thought process involved.
I'd like to second James Kunstler's drive to re-define ourselves as a culture. We are not consumers. We are citizens. Citizens belong to one another, they belong to a country and a countryside, and have a civic duty of sorts. A consumer feels that everything belongs to it, in terms of its appetites and in-distinguished wants and needs.
