"I was a bookworm, and very skinny with big, thick glasses. I never went on dates and guys were afraid of me because I was smart. So I got contact lenses, started to dress a little better and tried not to talk about Plato with boys. It worked!"
My Story class today made up a story where a girl is in a swimming pool at night, the lights suddenly go out and when she gets to the locker room it's just pandemonium. It's dark, people are running everywhere, there's no electricity, and the looting has started. She can't see where her locker is, it's pitch black, so she runs outside still in her bathing suit. Missiles (presumably from North Korea)are flying in the sky and the city is burning.
We write and imagine catastrophe. We've seen flashes in New York. Will we be at the movies or watching TV when the next catastrophe hits, or will we be consciously working to resist or prevent it? Protesting things like elections, policy, wars and warmongerers. Talking about it. And having fewer babies...
I found myself today imagining a world in which only 10% of the people remain. Imagine how much there will be for everyone. How many open houses, how many cars lying around. How much food and stuff in stores. Imagine what a relaxed life it would be if in your city, suddenly, there were only 10% of the people. There'd be more work for fewer people and each person would be appreciated more. Maybe we are multiplying ourselves towards a competitive race that ends in destruction.
"It's a scary time ... this is how the Roman Empire fell. We're dancing as Rome burns." (Julianne Moore, on our society's obsession with celebrity)
