Obama Will Yell at B.P. From Behind His Desk, So You Know It’s Serious

President Obama will deliver his very first Oval Office address for the purpose of censuring B.P., thus indicating that he is sufficiently discontent with the company’s behavior. Sitting behind his desk and staring plaintively but forcefully into the eyes—nay, souls—of the American people while they wait for whatever television show he interrupted to begin is the most serious thing a sitting president can do. The New York Times expresses its distaste for Obama’s failure to invoke this executive power until now: the Oval Office is “a setting that past presidents have often used but which Mr. Obama never has, despite the gravity of the issues his administration has already faced, including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, and the president’s signature domestic initiative, overhauling the health care system.”
