SHOOT: Swine flu is doubling in the United Kingdom, and is spiking 13% in the rest of Europe, 18% on average in South American countries.
Cases of swine flu have almost doubled in a week with more young people being hit and fears that hospitals may soon be struggling to cope.
Figures yesterday showed an estimated 53,000 new cases in the past seven days - up from 27,000 the previous week.
The total is now put at 435,000 and experts believe it could peak at 1.5million a week which would put huge pressure on the NHS.
Overall, deaths from the virus have risen to 128 - 93 in England, 21 in Scotland, eight in Northern Ireland and six in Wales. Just under half had other severe health problems.
More than half of deaths have been among under-45s, not over-65s as expected.
Sir Liam said: "It's highly unusual to have so many younger people dying. We shouldn't pass this off as acceptable."
It is also estimated that one in three children could catch the disease.
