An inspiring story from Mr. South Africa, Stephen Segal

Stephen is passionate about the concept of positive thoughts leading to positive actions, but says that it helps to have a strong support system – like he has in his wife.

Durban-born Stephen speaks from experience as he openly admits to still having to fight the effects of depression.

“Last year after a fallout with my business partner I lost two businesses, was seriously depressed and found myself comfort eating and ballooning to almost 130kg with a 42-inch (106cm) waist,” he said.

Stephen, who was previously a lifesaver and surfer and played both rugby and polo, found himself unhappy and unsure of what to do with his life. His only refuge seemed to be chocolate and fast food.

Stephen says that working with underprivileged people opened his eyes to what he had to be grateful for and he decided to make a change in his life.

One evening after months of feeling bad about himself and looking for a job he came across an article on a former Mr South Africa which made him think about what he could achieve if he had the title.
