Nieu Bethesda: Where local really is lekker

Indeed, the Kompassberg – the backdrop to this quintessentially mountain village – is South Africa’s highest free standing mountain (2502m). Local farming nomenclature implies atypical geography; Nieu Bethesda developed on a farm called Uitkyk (in order to provide both a town and a congregation for the local community in 1875), but apparently Uitkyk refers to being on the lookout for wild animals and Bushmen – not sightseeing.
As you approach Nieu Bethesda, the road - the N9 – seems to convulse. On the one side there is the Lootsberg pass and at the other Naudespas. 55km north of Graaff-Reinett (on the Middelburg side) is the sign that takes you off the tar road over 30km of white serpentine dirt roads. (more…)
