Extreme wave event - South African Coast

One of the worst-hit areas was the Overberg region around Hermanus where a fishing boat was sunk in the new harbour.

NVDL: This is fascinating.

On Sunday 31 August 2008 the significant wave height (Hs) off Cape Town rose to approximately 10m. These extreme wave conditions extended both north and east. On Tuesday morning Hs rose again to over 6m for a time - as another front dragged a new SW'ly fetch zone in behind it.

Coupled with tides close to spring high there was a heavy
surge (mainly wave set-up) which caused extensive coastal
flooding. On top of this came the extremely high waves which
inflicted further damage to coastal infrastructure. One of
the worst-hit areas was the Overberg region around Hermanus
where a fishing boat was sunk in the new harbour.
