KYKNET Video Competition

A friend of my father's entered some video they shot on a trip to Bostswana. This stuff was given over - by KYKNET to a public, popular vote, and in the end Slakkie (deservedly) won, Bobbejaan (my dad's video) came second, and Bruid, a bride-mistaken-as-a-mannequin came third. First prize walked away with a holiday for 2 to Thailand plus a trailer worth R120 000. 2nd and 3rd place receive scaled down versions of these super trailers.

I was in the room next door while the show - Kwela - was being rewarded. So I got to meet the 'bride' entries, a pair of attractive Durbanites, and then the 'Slakkie' threesome - two lovely ladies and the cute little girl, and of course it was great to see my father who came up to Joburg especially, and his buddy, the 'Frontman', who accepted the prize.

Wilma van der Bijl also sat in the lounge with us before the show, and later went on to talk about breast cancer awareness. Very articulate lady. And very tall. I also met Vanessa, who once organised the Miss SA contests, and seemed to be Wilma's assistant of sorts, and someone who works here funnily enough. She said she was supposed to meet David Bullard on the night he was shot, and ended up not going to his home that night.

And then we spoke with the host, Coenie de Villers. I actually sat in a class of his once at Free State University (when I contemplated a career in journalism once upon a time). Interesting being here then; full circle.

MNET is a marvellous building. Great place to work. I thought the show itself was also done pretty well. Coenie drove out of the parking lot in a glossy Audi TT. An apt reward for a job that I think he does well, or have I said that already. Is he an Afrikaans David Bullard?
