The article below illustrates an interesting irony - I always wondered why Armstrong 'bailed out' of cycling, when he was on top of the world. Why not cycle not to win? I'm not being defeatist, I'm just suggesting, if you're not in the ballpark (because of being stale, or not ready), why not go out and get the experience.
I believe it is important to go out to win, to do well. But equally important, you can't always win, you can't stay on top of Everest once you've made the summit. So enjoy parts of the peak, and often, the lowest slopes are the easiest to enjoy even if they don't always have the best views.
I'm disappointed about yesterday, but at least I can walk on the beach afterwards. Better that than being in Bloemfontein now, wondering: what if?
