When I emerged in the dead cold of this morning (from my apartment), three rabbits were sitting in a line in the parking lot.
I got off to a good start, if slightly late: 06:15
Stopped twice, both times to dispose of bodily waste, and quickly filled up the second time.
Arrived in PE - beautiful sunny weather, and smooth, blue ocean - at 12:20. So made good time.
I'm staying at the Bedford Guest House in 10th Avenue. Quite nice. I'm downstairs and Berendine and San Mari are upstairs. San Mari's dad is back in SA too - he's been in Iraq for about a year.
Saw Glen Gore and Raynard Tissink just before the time trial.
Wasn't too happy when about 4 riders due to start in front of me didn't pitch (no rabbits to chase). And since it was my first ramp start, felt quite nervous.
Got off the ramp okay, but immediately felt like I wasn't very fresh. Felt that yesterday too. Think Saturday's 120km is still hurting me, plus a touch of flu.
Road hard, nevertheless, and afterwards checked my average heart rate: 171 (max 176). That's super high.
Raynard caught me a little after 15km, and so did 2 other guys. Think my average speed was 35km/h. I've averaged 40km/h over 40km and 37km/h over 90km, so there's some perspectivel.
Also got a flat with about 750-500m to go. My wheel exploded open like it had ridden over a razor.
Not a nice finish but hey, at least I have the experience to take home with me.
Going to take it easy tomorrow. Walk on the beach, think about whether I want to race on Sunday. Probably go and photograph riders and the waves at J-Bay.
Just watch me burn - Rocketboy
