SHOOT: The Boks looked the more cohesive of the two sides, but the final score - 26-21 is deceptive. The Lions were denied 3 touch and go tries (Monye lost 2) and missed two penalties. Bok skipper John Smit admitted his charges were 'rusty'.
The lions pair of Roberts and Irish captain 'O Driscoll proved very dangerous. Habana was unlucky with two failed interceptions that could have also gone the other way, ditto Jean de Villiers (though Jean proved valuable in denying Monye an almost certain try). In a suprise twist, Beast (who took man of the match) pummelled Vickery in the scrummages, while the young Cheetah Heinrich Brussow scored in his home debut. Smit also scored. But where was Pierre Spies?
The next game ought to be a cracker as both teams will galvanise themselves, each believing they're the best. At Loftus, the Boks have got to have the edge over the Reds.
Brian O’Driscoll is fed up with being on unsuccessful British & Irish Lions tours and is determined to end his career with a series win.
O’Driscoll has been on two Lions tours, and won just one of the four Test matches he’s been involved in. He debuted in Australia in 2001 and captained the Lions in 2005, where his series was cut short after being unceremoniously spear-tackled by Tana Umaga.
At 30 years old, this South Africa tour could well be his last opportunity to capture one of the few accolades in the game that alludes him, and O’Driscoll is desperate for it.
‘Defeat is not an option for me. I want to be part of a winning Lions series,’ he told keo.co.za. ‘I have no interest in coming on tour and being part of a squad that loses the series. I’ve been there and done that. I would like to be part of a team that creates history and does something special.
‘We’re a work in progress. I don’t think you’ve seen all we’re capable of as a combination yet,’ he said.
