SHOOT: Hi, I'm a nice guy. Mind giving me all your money?
Barry Tannenbaum has been likened to jailed US businessman Bernard Madoff, who swindled a reported 65-billion from thousands of investors in his elaborate Ponzi scheme.
Firstly, both men successfully managed to gain investors’ confidence because they were simply such nice guys.
Wayne Gadden, an investor who was dup ed by Tannenbaum, told the Financial Mail this week: “Barry’s a great human being. He lives in a modest home, and he’s so trusting. .. I just can’t fathom that he was involved in this.”
Shapiro allegedly lost 400-million and said, when he discovered that he had been scammed by the man he treated like a son, it was like a “knife in the heart”.
But if published reports are anything to go by, Madoff’s sister, Sondra Wiener, was also taken for a ride.
Tannenbaum’s victims included the former Pick ’n Pay CEO Sean Summers, the former JSE chairman Norman Lowenthal and the former Bond Exchange CEO Tom Lawless. — Nashira Davids
