Costa Rica has reported its first death from a case of swine flu, according to the country's health minister.

The 53-year-old man's death was the first to be recorded in Central America and made Costa Rica the fourth country to report a swine flu fatality.

The man also had asthma and diabetes.

Meanwhile, Australia's health minister has confirmed the country's first case of swine flu, but said the victim had a weak strain of the virus and was no longer infectious.

Norway has also confirmed its first two cases of the disease.

The new H1N1 flu has recently killed its first patient in Canada, making it the third country after Mexico and the United States to report a death from the virus that has infected more than 3,000 people in 27 countries.

On Friday the United States overtook its southern neighbour to become the country with the most number of patients, confirming 1,639 cases in 43 states, to Mexico's 1,319 cases.
