Why is crime in South Africa so serious? For 2 reasons [ANALYSIS]

NVDL: This is an excellent an insightful article by Mark Lamberti. It provides us with a disturbing insight - that we will be living with crime for decades to come.
Peter Jackson was 71 when he was robbed and murdered in his cottage on June 2. The last decades of his life were dedicated exclusively to the least-privileged members of our society.

He organised and distributed thousands of blankets and food hampers in Soweto and Alexandra, for example. Statistically speaking, his was one of 53 murders and 347 robberies reported on that day.

There are no trite explanations for the high rates of crime in our country, but the work of Business Against Crime SA (BAC) over the past 12 years has verified two equally important, interdependent causes.

The first is that much of the criminal behaviour is attributable to deep-seated sociopathic issues that have their root in disrupted childhood experiences. It is clear that apartheid destroyed the fabric of our society, particularly the family structure and education facilities of the majority.
The second is that the efficiency of the criminal justice system is simply too low to be a deterrent
