Pete and the Wolf

Pete's a guy I met through the Ilsan Triathlon Club. He works for Metlife, and often goes home to Jeju Island, to see his folks. He was at the 2004 Ironman but things didn't go smoothly for him either.

Pete called me at about 5:10am. I had already been up for an hour, and was about to call him. He sounded really groggy, but said he was still up for the trip, here, to Phoenix Park - Koreas's 2nd biggest ski area after Yongpyong.

We left Ilsan at aboput 5:45am and less than 30 minutes later while on the highway I noticed a strange circular object on the highwway. I think it was an old truck tyre, just lying in the lane to our left. A moment later an SUV hit it, lifted into the air, and came down with a crunch, bursting its front tyres and basically just grinding to a halt as it fell away behind us.

There was a mishap at the ski shop, but I'll cover that at a later stage.
We got to Phoenix Park just before 9am, and bought our ski lift tickets and some breakfast. The weather was warm, but perfect for skiing. Clear, crisp and sunny.
