SHOOT: Personally it is very disconcerting for me to discover that the Cape is experiencing these heat waves. My experience in Australia was similar - heatwaves in Sydney and thousands of kilometres away, in Perth, as well as in Melbourne, and to the north, in places like Broome. I'd suggest that journalists make a circuit of several countries to determine that actually, very many countries are experiencing the simultaneous reality of a warming world. The problem is our information is fragmented and discontinuous.
Cape Town - Fires continued to burn on the mountains around Cape Town on Thursday as temperatures across the Western Cape soared to above 40°C.
Western Cape Agricultural Union chief executive Carl Opperman said the hot weather was making the situation worse for farmers who had been battling fires for the past weeks.
"The hot weather is making everything worse, especially because we are busy with the harvest season," he said.
"Quite a few farms have been damaged in the Boland area. Most of the damage has been to forestry. Some vineyards have also been lost due to scorching from the heat."
Two of the worst affected farms were Vergelegen and Lourensford.
The weekend's stiflingly hot conditions saw rescue services scrambling to help hikers and walkers around the city, and even saw the route for the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Mountain Bike Challenge shortened to protect riders.
Temperatures are expected to start dropping tomorrow, and rain is predicted for Wednesday.
