"Another urine scandal at varsity" - Sunday Times making a hullabaloo about nothing

The [black] student whose linen was urinated on said he had just put his washing on the line when the incident occurred.

SHOOT: Here's a question. Did white students seek out a black student's linen and urinate on it? What's missing in this awesome piece of journalism is a leeetle bit of context. That after the rugby everyone's clothes got urinated on. It's tradition. It's one of those crazy thing university kids get up to. Like vomitting after drinking too much alcohol. It's university. This sort of pettiness, where every little thing that happens to me I'm going to 'cry racism' - is this going to be the tempo day by day for the next few years? That doesn't make for a progressive South African society, just a petty one. The next thing you'll be hearing when a white partner breaks up with a black person this is also racist. Um...it's called life. Quit complaining and newspapers, quit spreading hysteria. To the folks out there, maybe think twice about buying newspapers that peddle this sort of 'story by suggestion' and call it 'news'. Its rumor mongering, it's pernicious and it's inciteful. It's NOT a public service, in fact it's the opposite.

Another racially charged incident has surfaced at the University of the Free State.

The Sunday Times has established that senior students at the Karee residence urinated on a fellow student's bed linen.

Malema yesterday refused to comment, saying: "I am not going to speak about that."

"I washed my linen and hung them out to dry. There were some white students who had been watching a big rugby game and afterward they pulled the sheets from the line and urinated on it and also wet the sheets with alcohol."

The matter was reported to the residence head but, according to the victim, nothing was done about it.

"After a big match it's become somewhat of a tradition to urinate on people's clothes," he said.

"Professor Jansen handled the matter personally. There was a function on the day that senior students from the residence attended and allegations emerged that students urinated on the linen," the official said.

Jansen said yesterday: "I don't think this is an incident. I'm tired of this."
