SHOOT: Personally I don't see why there should be quotas in rugby. I don't watch South African soccer, and I only have an incidental interest in Bafana. Bafana are losers anyway, so why should anyone demand that white players [forget about merit] be put in the side. The Boks are winners, which is why everyone wants to be in the team. In short, Canadians watch ice hockey, and on average, South Africa's whites watch rugby, and not soccer, and blacks watch soccer, and not rugby. I'm sure there are exeptions, but not that many. Interestingly you never hear about a call for white quota players. Because nobody cares.
What amazes me is that you can have a world champion team despite and in spite of all the politics, greed, lying and double standards. For how long is another question. I guess by putting crap players in the mix, you end up raising the challenge for those who are there on merit, and what's happened? The boys have risen to the challenge. On a positive side, rugby has probably done more to unite the nation than anything else, possibly with one exception, Mandela.
The great thing about sport is its honesty. You watch it to see the guts and determination. Take that away and what are left with? A con.
