Thailand fears human-to-human transmission in bird flu cases
12/02/2005 -- 17:36(GMT+7)

Bangkok (VNA) - A Thai health expert has said that the two latest confirmed cases of human bird flu in the country might be the result of human-to-human transmission, Thai newspaper The Nations reported on December 2.

Dr. Charoen Chuchottaworn, a bird-flu expert at the Public Health Ministry, said that the two latest cases included a boy in Bangkok and an 18-year-old man from Nonthaburi province. They showed mild symptoms of bird flu virus and both had no direct contacts with poultry. Doctors do not yet know how the patients were infected with the H5N1 virus, and whether this may demonstrate that avian influenza has moved from causing severe human infection to milder cases.

The milder the symptoms, the harder it is for doctors to diagnose, Charoen said, adding that more advanced medical equipment is needed for tests of the two cases.--Enditem
