Globally, the total of confirmed cases has now reached 193,574 and the number of deaths 1,362. The biggest rise in the past seven days was recorded in Germany, where the 7,177 cases represented a leap of 114 per cent. The second largest increase (60 per cent) was in Argentina, where the figure rose to 4,895.

The figures were released as the World Health Organisation sought to reassure the public about the safety of swine flu vaccines. It emphasised that rigorous precautions had been taken. The fast-track production of swine flu vaccines included the preparatory use of “mock vaccines”, rolling reviews of data and established flu technologies. The WHO said on its website that
licensing procedures for pandemic vaccines did not compromise safety or quality controls.
